  1. 1908-1973. The 36th president of the USA
  2. 1963-69, a Democrat. He was born in
  3. Stonewall, Texas, elected to Congress 1937-49
  4. and the Senate 1949-60. His persuasive powers
  5. and hard work on domestic issues led J F
  6. Kennedy to ask him to be his vice
  7. presidential running mate 1960. Johnson
  8. brought critical Southern support which won a
  9. narrow victory. After the Tonkin Gulf
  10. Incident, the escalation of US involvement in
  11. the Vietnam War eventually dissipated the
  12. support won by his Great Society legislation
  13. (civil rights, education, alleviation of
  14. poverty), and he declined to run for
  15. re-election 1968. Following Kennedy's
  16. assassination, Johnson pushed many pieces of
  17. civil rights legislation through Congress.
  18. His foreign policy met with considerably less
  19. success, however.
